Soon as the Psychic type stepped out of the door and into the desert, the shadow from the giant cacti left the area surrounding the entrance rather brisk compared to the scorching heat of the sun beating down on the sand. As he began to venture forth, he readjusted the strap of the researcher’s kit so it would be held better over his shoulder. Last thing he needed was to accidentally break the phials inside.
“A-Alright Mat, let’s see if you remember what samples miss Solstice said we were looking for here. Petaya, Agave, Gigant and Salac I think? Ah well, they sound correct at least. Which one should I do first?” He pondered to himself, stumbling forward as his feet sunk slightly into the sand with each step and his focus dedicated to how he is gonna plan out collecting everything. “Well… First step should probably be getting the permission to collect these samples or befriending a local from here possibly? That will make the task a bit more simple for me. I-I think.”
Soon the sight of a prickly looking fern coming from the ground was in clear view, it’s briars looking like they were coated in pollen like substance. This looked completely identical to the description of the Agave cacti given to him by Solstice so this must be one of the plants of that type. It was only a short jog away from the inn itself as well, so it didn’t even take too much time to find this one.
As he neared himself to the cactus in question to get a closer look, what sounds like an adult male’s voice comes up from a good few feet behind him. It sounded almost like it was around Vincent’s age. “Hey, you drop somethin' in that cacti over there?”
Mathilde’s fur stood on end as he slowly turned his head to find who had spotted him studying the plant life. First thing that came into view was what appeared to be a freckled Teddiursa just slightly taller than he was in height. Some of the fur on his head seemed to be pulled back in a short ponytail reaching to the nape of his neck, and his hands was covered by a pair of fingerless brown leather gloves.
“You okay there, stranger? You look paler than my cousin’s fur after he bolted out of the shower when our heating went out.” the Teddiursa questioned, cocking his head to the side with a furrowed brow. His eyes seemed to be studying over the satchel toted over the Psychic type’s shoulder. “You searchin' for somethin', or is somethin' else the matter? Don't worry, I won’t bite.”
“A-Actually I do think I might need some assistance. You don’t happen to be a local here, do you?” Mathilde questioned, a cold sweat dripping from his face as began to tug on the strap of the satchel. How exactly was he going to explain what he needed to do without coming off as sketchy? “I-I’ve been tasked to gather samples of the local flora here for the Researcher’s guild. We only require a small pollen sample for analysis later. I just need to get permission from the locals possibly first.”
“I'm 'fraid not, buddy. I’m only here for a visit with my aunt Teagan 'nd my cousin Griffon, plus one delivery addressed here. In fact, I was just 'bout ta finish up with the later. I just need ta bring Sherman her order of four loaves of bread, 'nd I’m done. However...” the Teddiursa paused for a moment, stroking his chin a bit as he closed his eyes briefly. “I don’t really have much in the way of plans anyway. I’ll help ya out. Name’s Timothy, though you can just call me Tim. Your name?”
“M-Mat. My name is Mat. I-It’s nice to meet you.” Mathilde replied, extending out his hand hesitantly for a handshake. Timothy eyed his hand for a moment, before reaching out with his own and shaking the Meowstic’s hand with a wide smile.
“Nice to meet ya, Matt. So which ones ya still needin' ta grab exactly, outside of those Agave?” the Teddiursa inquired, as Mathilde was scraping a small portion of the spores from the plant in question into the vial. It was going to help to know what he would need to be looking for.
“U-Um… Petaya, Salac and Gigant. The Gigant sounds like it would be the most difficult to get though.” he responded, corking the phial to prevent the spores from scattering about in the researching kit later and placing it in the bag.
Tim stretched his legs a bit, getting himself prep up for the long walks ahead. “I know where a bit of each of those are thankfully, so this shouldn’t take too much time I reckon. At least the first two shouldn’t take too long anyway.”
“Ah well, let’s get started. Just follow my lead, Matt. We’ll get this all done in a jiffy.” Soon after he said that, Tim started walking on towards the next location where two of the cacti types: Salac and Petaya are found grouped with each other. Every so often, turning his head to make sure the Meowstic was still following him all the while. “So since you say you're in a guild, who's your partner? You got one, right?”
“M-My brother actually. His name is Vincent, and he is about four years older than me. I-In fact he is doing a task as well as we speak. I-I think anyway.” Mathilde meekly responded, scratching the back his head as he tried to keep up with the Normal type the best he could. “I-I’m 22.”
“Nice. I’m 25 myself. What do you 'nd your brother do for a living exactly? You both full time researchers or this just a hobby for ya?”
“M-More the later. Vincent is a vintner and I’m trying to get into being an author.” Mathilde replied, twiddling his index fingers as he was finally seeming to catch up to the normal type. It has been a good while since the last time he had a conversation going this well for him. “Y-You?”
“My Pa runs the family bakery back in Andalusst that he started once he moved there from Geoda. He's arguably one of the best bakers in town, at least I think of him that way. I guess you could say I’m the delivery boy though most of the time I’m not out 'nd about, I tend the register and the front counter.” Timothy responded, now finally coming a halt as multiple cacti darted the surrounding area.
The reddish pink flowers of the Petaya and the green tones of the flowers of the Salac were clearly seen from the usual yellow shaded sand. “Here you go! Now we just double back 'nd take the pollen from Thirsty Cacturne’s flower. It gets knocked off by the wind on occasion, though I wouldn’t recommend vast amounts in your pelt. That stuff is a pain to get out from what Griff said ta me last visit.”
Mathilde took out two small vials and a small scalpel from his kit as he gently scraped the surface of one of each of the cacti type’s flowers to pour the pollen into the containers, sealing them both with a cork so they could be stored with the other one from earlier containing the Agave pollen. “One more left. T-Thank you for the assistance with this. I really appreciate this.”
“No problem bud! All you'll need is that Gigant pollen and you got them all from what ya said. Let’s head on back to the Thirsty Cacturne and grab that last one. We didn’t go too far off thankfully.” He responded as he began walking once more back the way they came from, with the Meowstic following closely behind.
“S-So you mentioned your father’s job in that last topic I believe. What does your mother do as a job?” Mathilde questioned, not expecting the topic to cause the Teddiursa to pause briefly in his tracks abruptly as he walks straight into him on accident.
“My Ma?” he muttered to himself briefly before beginning to walk forwards once again albeit slightly slower than before. “She was truly someone special. As a cashier, she was one of the most beloved people I known. As a mother, I couldn’t asked for anything more. She was strong, kind 'nd was almost always willin' to lend a hand to anyone who needed it most. I don’t believe I heard a single rumor about her throughout my life. Might be partially due to my Pa being rather intimidatin' to some folks but I can’t say for sure.”
However, he stopped his train of thought when he realized where they were now standing within range of the gigantic cactus inn once again. The cookout appeared to be going underway, as groups of people were scattered about the area. “Ah well, we’re here now. So now it’s just a matter of waitin' til some gust picks up to knock some loose. Shouldn’t take too long I reckon.”
Soon after he said that, a brisk breeze kicked up as a cloud of pollen began slowly drift down from above and towards the desert sands below. Mathilde took out one of the remaining phials and using his psychic power quickly attempted to place down the flask underneath the landing point of the cloud where it began to slowly fill up the inside of the bottle. After the pollen cloud settled down, Mathilde took out one of the cloths from within the research tools to pick up and wipe down the slightly sticky vial of the remainder. “T-That should do it!” he stated aloud as corked the flask shut. “T-Thank you so much for the assist, Tim.”
“No problem, Matt! Now that’s finished, I gotta hurry 'nd get this batch to Sherman. I hadn’t even paid any attention to the time since I started.” He remarked as he looked up as the sun appeared to be setting down. As night seemed to be closing in rather soon, he made his way into the now crowded tavern’s entrance “Hopefully she won’t mind too much though. Ah well, once I finish up, I'll try to meet with you after. I want to know how it goes with your sibling. Besides, I wouldn’t be against gettin' to meet him either.”
“A-Alright! S-Sounds good to me, Tim. I will see you then!” Mathilde responded, following the Teddiursa up to the entrance until they parted from each other for the time being to handle their respective business.
